Food StructureChapter 5: Fueling the Engine

Do I need to count macros?

Short answer first. Full logic in the chapter.

Answer

In Month 1: Yes, loosely. Not to obsess — to calibrate your perception.

Most people have wildly distorted ideas of portion sizes. What you think is "a serving of rice" could be 3 servings. A "drizzle" of olive oil could be 300 calories.

How to track without going crazy:

  • 1. Weigh solid food RAW and DRY (cooked weight varies wildly)
  • 2. Track protein grams — that's the only non-negotiable number
  • 3. Estimate everything else within ~100 kcal accuracy
  • 4. After 4-6 weeks, your eye will be calibrated — you can ease off tracking

After calibration: You'll know intuitively that a chicken breast is ~165 kcal and 31 g (1.1 oz) protein. Your hand is roughly a protein serving. A fist is roughly a carb serving.

The goal is to BUILD the skill, then let it run on autopilot. Not to become a slave to an app forever.
