What is NEAT?
Short answer first. Full logic in the chapter.
NEAT = Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis — all the calories you burn through subconscious movement: fidgeting, walking to the kitchen, standing, typing, even gesturing while talking.
Why it matters: NEAT can account for 200–900 kcal/day. When you diet aggressively, your body drops NEAT dramatically — you sit more, fidget less, move slower. You don't notice it happening.
This is Adaptive Thermogenesis in action. Your body quietly lowers the burn to match the reduced fuel intake.
The fix:
- Walk 7,000-10,000 steps daily (non-negotiable baseline)
- Stand more — use a standing desk or take calls on your feet
- Set a 90-minute alarm to get up and move
- NEVER cut calories below a 500 kcal deficit — that's where NEAT collapses
